Some Unique Family Activities for School Break
When we think of March break in Québec, we immediately think of winter sports: downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking… Of course, you’ll find all these in Brome-Missisquoi, but the region also has some well-kept winter secrets. Here are a few suggestions for some quite unique family activities for guaranteed rosy cheeks and loads of fun!
A Dog Sled Outing
Aukaneck Aventure, a Bedford-based company, offers an activity that you must experience at least once! After peeking inside the maternity ward (a definite highlight), you’ll head to the kennel where you’ll meet the pack, and then the kickoff is given for 45 minutes of fun and forest exploration! When you return, coffee, hot chocolate and homemade products will be waiting for you at the boutique.
Ride the Slopes on a Yooner
Have you ever tried riding a yooner? This glide sport was brought here directly from France’s Haute-Savoie region, and can only be practised at the Mount SUTTON ski resort! Imagine a small luge fitted with a seat 20 cm from the ground, a mini-ski, with a suspension and a brake handle. The concept is quite simple: You sit on the saddle and control the vehicle with your hips as you direct your turns with your arms; To slow down you use your feet or the brake handle! It’s somewhat like pretending to fly while surfing on the snow! A sport as easy as it is entertaining, for 8-year-olds and up.
A Day of Ice Fishing
Treat your family to a day of ice fishing on Missisquoi Bay thanks to Activités plein air Philipsburg outfitters. You’ll be warmly welcomed by Angèle, Philippe and Michaël, and enjoy a turnkey experience since all the equipment is included in your package. Fishing shacks come in five sizes able to welcome between 4 and 20 guests. Telephone reservations are required.
Skating your Way across Brome Lake
Pull on your skates and head out on the ice oval at In the town of Brome Lake. Enjoy a beautiful view of the lake and warm up by the outdoor fireplace. From the beach, you can also snowshoe or cross-country ski your way to the town of Knowlton by following the Coldbrook Path. Before you leave home, we advise you to check ice conditions by consulting the Brome-Lake Facebook page.
Try a Fatbike
Whether you’re already a fan or just curious about this winter sport, Bromont is where all the fun starts! The Parc des Sommets offers about twenty trails on the Village, Mount Oak and the Mountain networks for a total of nearly 50 km of marked trails! Follow your progress in real time via the AllTrails or ONDAGO applications. Different size fatbikes (from junior to extra-large) can be rented here and includes your daily access.
For Animal Lovers
Treat yourself to a truly sweet experience by visiting one of the region’s two alpaca farms. Your children’s hearts will be won over for sure, and we bet yours will too! The team at Alpaga Sutton and the one at Domaine des Nobles Alpagas in the Town of Brome-Lake will be happy to welcome you throughout the weekend and share their passion and knowledge as you learn more about their very special herds! Take a moment to visit their boutiques where you’ll find all kinds of products made with these endearing animals’ wool!
Here’s a short list of indoor activity suggestions for those of you who would like to keep warm awhile! Tone your muscles by climbing the boulders at the Backbone climbing centre in Bromont. Treat yourself to some hot chocolate at the Musée du Chocolat in Bromont or at Chocolaterie Belge Muriel in Sutton; Or yet again, offer yourself and your children a delightful outing by attending a show at Espace Diffusion, in Cowansville; La petite sorcière gentille will be presented on March 5 2023. As you follow the story of a little witch with a big heart, Marie-Annick Lépine, accompanied by her friend Catherine Durand, will introduce your youngsters to nine musical instruments through nine songs from her magnificent children’s album J’ai brodé mon cœur.
