Explore Sutton’s charms on cross-country skis

Last week, I braved temperatures approaching -20°C to explore the 21 kilometres of cross-country ski trails of Plein air Sutton (previously called Sutton en haut). The site, which has more than 100 acres, has existed since 1973 and is set in a magnificent century-old forest close to the ski hill.

When I got there, I immediately headed to the cozy reception chalet, where I was warmly received by Micheline at the reception desk. This was where I rented my equipment. She advised me about which trails I should go on.

Quite promptly, I was able to get on the trails and start exploring Sutton’s magnificent snow-laden forests. After I had skied for just a few metres, the exercise had warmed my body, and I no longer felt the bracing cold.

The directional signage was well done, and with the help of a small map which had been provided at the entrance, I was easily able to make my way along a good portion of the 21 kilometres of freshly groomed trails.

I would have liked to have taken more photos of the superb landscape but, unfortunately, my camera was frozen. So, I simply took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the experience to the fullest. I especially liked the charm and tranquility of the place. By the time I got back, I was totally zen.

And I’m also planning to go back this winter to explore the snowshoe trails and try out fatbike trails.

Moonlight outings

I strongly recommend that you go to Plein air Sutton for one of its full-moon nights. Whenever there is a full moon during the winter months, Plein air Sutton organizes an evening outing by the light of the moon. Three different outings are offered (45, 60 and/or 90 minutes). When you come back, a steaming hot chocolate is served around a campfire. The activity costs just $5 and it makes for a great family outing. The next full moon will be on January 23.
