Lac-Brome with the family: activities for all tastes
Looking for a memorable family getaway? Head to the picturesque Eastern Townships region of Brome Lake! From wildlife sightings to nautical activities and nature hikes, here you’ll find everything you need to please your entire clan.
Start the Day Out Strong
There’s nothing like a good cup of coffee to give you the energy you need to launch your family adventure! You’ll find specialty blends, expertly prepared by experienced baristas at Virgin Hill Coffee Roasters. While you savour your coffee, the kids can treat themselves to delicious home-made pastries, and the hungriest among them can opt for a breakfast sandwich, the perfect start to a busy day.
A tip from a pro: Buy your coffee in bulk to prolong your flavour experience at home!
Good to know: To enhance your “coffee” moment, you can actually roast your own beans! A great idea, don’t you think? Oh, and throughout the summer months, the coffee shop also offers ice cream! 🤤
Enjoy an Alpaca Encounter
Who says exotic animals only exist in faraway countries? At the Domaine des Nobles Alpagas, these adorable mammals, originating from South America, will invite you to enjoy an educational experience, and a very touching one as well!
The free guided tour lasts about 1 hour 15 minutes and will introduce you to these magnificent animals and their environment. Learn about the origins of alpacas, the different species, their physical characteristics and the features that give their wool an added value. The highlight of the day? A visit to the breeding facilities and, during the birthing season, the maternity ward 😍. The tour ends with a stop at the farm’s boutique, where you’ll appreciate for yourself the softness and thermal qualities of the clothing and accessories made from alpaca wool.
A tip from a pro: Plan to bring a picnic lunch! The domain has set up some tables in a quiet area by a pond where you can enjoy your meal.
Good to know: Because alpacas are rather skittish animals, you’ll need to follow a few rules. Therefore, no dogs (even small ones) are allowed, and children must avoid running and shouting. Visits are possible from July 1 to November 15, Wednesdays to Sundays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Outside these dates, self-guided visits are available on weekends.
Douglass Beach: A Water Paradise
To stretch your legs and enjoy a refreshing swim, head to Douglass Beach, just outside Knowlton! This sandy beach has everything you could wish for: lifeguards, pails, shovels and other toys to share, a play module featuring a fitness circuit, changing rooms and washrooms, an outdoor shower, and a canteen. You can also access a ramp for non-motorized boats and several picnic tables. Plus, you’ll enjoy the superb view from here, especially during the golden hour.
The Lac-Brome Path and the Circuit des Trois Lacs: Cycling Adventures for Everyone!
Outdoor enthusiasts, this activity will absolutely thrill you! The Lac-Brome Path is an 11.15 km linear route linking Knowlton’s historic downtown area to the Foster sector. Besides offering you some amazing views of the lake and the natural environment, you’ll also discover some very impressive homes built along the shore. Plus, you’ll enjoy exploring the Quilliams-Durrell reserve as you go. When you reach Trestle Cove, stop for a moment to admire the breathtaking view overlooking the lake and surrounding hills.
Did you know that this trail spans much farther than the Foster region? In fact, it’s part of the Circuit des Trois Lacs cycling network. This linear itinerary will take you all the way to the municipal beach in Waterloo, and then to Granby’s Lake Boivin sector! A 74 km excursion (out and back); perfect for families that love to take on a challenge!
With children, we particularly recommend the section between Douglass Beach and Waterloo’s municipal beach. This bicycle outing, accessible to cyclists of all levels, offers a well-deserved reward at the end of the route: refreshing water games, play modules for the little ones and shaded picnic areas. Although swimming is prohibited in Lake Waterloo, boat rentals are available for those wishing to explore the waterway.
A tip from a pro: Plan to bring a picnic lunch and a change of clothing for your young ones who’ll certainly want to try the water games!
Your four-legged friends are welcome everywhere on the trail (on a leash, of course!), and information panels can be found throughout the path to guide you all along your nature adventure.
La Knowlton Co: Relaxation and Friendly Ambiance
You’ll find the ideal way to end your busy day by discovering La Knowlton Co! Indeed, this local microbrewery offers the perfect family-friendly venue.
Its terrace looking out onto the forest was designed to welcome children. Outdoor games and toys are available for them to enjoy as they make new friends. Parents can relax and enjoy an excellent craft beer accompanied by a delicious home-made pizza baked in a wood-fired oven.
Each beer tells a unique story through a cartoon-inspired labelling. An experience that will appeal to beer fans and connoisseurs alike, all in a friendly, relaxed setting.
To Prolong the Adventure
Clearly, one day isn’t enough to explore all the wonders of the Town of Brome Lake! Why not extend your stay? The region is full of family-friendly lodging options, from rustic cottages to comfortable hotels.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a keen water sports fan or just looking for a relaxing family moment, Brome Lake has it all. So why not plan your next family getaway in this little corner of paradise in the Eastern Townships?
