Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge

Established on the banks of the Rivière aux Brochets, the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge owes its economic growth to the river’s hydro energy. Many dams and water mills served as the driving force behind the region’s development, by generating electricity and providing mechanical power to sawmills, grain mills, and wool processing plants.

The municipality was founded in the early 1800s, and quickly made its mark through the pioneering role it played. In fact, it was Lower Canada’s first incorporated municipality; the region’s first Catholic church was built here. And it was Stanbridge Township’s first French-speaking village.

Among the town’s notable figures, we count Dr. Lambert, inventor of the famous Lambert cough syrup, still available in pharmacies today, and the Des Rivières family, who contributed greatly to the municipality’s growth. They were also responsible for the construction of the Des Rivières covered bridge. Today, the municipality is home to approximately 700 residents.

With its rather flat terrain, Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge is a prime destination for cyclists who prefer more leisurely outings. The nearby accommodations invite visitors to prolong the experience by staying overnight or longer to truly enjoy the region’s relaxing environment.
