Ten years ago, my friend suggested I try snowboarding on the site of Bromont, montagne d’expériences. As a city slicker, I knew all about brownish slush, but now I had the chance to indulge in the real joys of winter, and I fell in love with the spectacular landscape in the Eastern Townships’ region. I had the pleasure of returning there this winter, and once again, I fell in love.

I made my first downhill runs (and landings!) on the ski school trail and on Mont Soleil. Learning places that are a gleeful experience, the ski school trail and Mont Soleil are absolutely ideal for beginners. I really love the ambiance in this part of the mountain. On my last trip there, some fun facilities, such as hoops, and some big, stuffed toys allow youngsters (and adults who are kids at heart!) to enjoy themselves between downhill runs.

For the last few years, my playground has mainly been on the Versants du Lac and the du Village trails. But there is something to suit every skier’s fancy in Bromont: undergrowth, steeper sections and family trails. I recently discovered the Versant des Cantons trail, an area that has less traffic but is filled with snowy treasures. In all, Bromont, montagne d’expériences has seven outstanding slopes for skiers and snowboarders of every calibre. And for fans of the “rails” and ”jumps”, you’re in luck because you have five snow parks at your disposal!

I’ve been a season-pass holder at Bromont, montagne d’expériences for many winters. Why? For plenty of reasons: the geographic location (under an hour from Montréal and 30 minutes from my new home in Magog!), the affordable price for a season pass and, especially, for the night skiing! The mountain boasts the distinction of being the largest lit skiable terrain in North America! I love night skiing because it gives you the chance to unwind after a busy work day or be able to ski into the wee hours of the morning with the Nuits Blanches events organized by the ski station. Ninety-nine of the 141 trails at the station are lit at night-time, so there is no shortage of choices to ski, snowboard or do telemark skiing!

Food-wise, everyone can find something to appease their appetite. Have a hankering for a large poutine? A hearty soup? A salad? A wrap? No problem! From morning to night, the station can take care of the hunger pangs in your tummy with an impressive food offering in its five restaurants. Meanwhile, for the après-ski crowd, head over to the chalet du Village at the La Débarque bistro-bar to unwind with a nice cold beer! I really like the theme-based nights such as the Mardis Gras, where you can personalize your poutine or the Dimanches Mijotés for a price-friendly, delicious stew!

There’s absolutely no doubt that Bromont, montagne d’expériences bears its name well. All of the ingredients are there for a great time. Here’s some friendly advice: take some time to enjoy the community of Bromont during your visit. Stay in one of the many hotels in the area, shop at the Factories Tanger outlet and warm yourself with a Vieux-Village coffee. It’s a good bet that after you’ve been there, Bromont will be among your favourite winter destinations!

I used to be the Montrealer who didn’t care much for winter.
